So, d'ye want to meet up on Discord sometime this week, and I'll do a little restoration primer? Could do it most days, but we'd need to coordinate schedule. Adam Cuerden (talk) 12:09, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi - the file name is incorrect for two reasons. There is a typo; Edward VIII not Edward VII. Secondly, at the time the picture was taken, Edward was not Edward VIII but Prince of Wales. Charlesjsharp (talk) 20:26, 16 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

I checked the website, but they only mentioned the "Creative Commons" license without specifying the conditions (BY/NC/ND) or version. Where can I verify this information that they released their images under CC BY-SA 4.0?--Namoroka (talk) 03:02, 10 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hello @Namoroka, since Sala de Medios is more of an institutional partnership of Wikimedistas de Uruguay, I'm stepping in to answer this question. When Sala de Medios applied the license, they didn't specify the version in their website. I'd suggest that we keep the most recent version of the license that was available when they did the release in 2018 (that would be version 3), particularly considering that the differences among license versions aren't particularly big. We've already requested them to clarify the license version. cheers, Scann (WDU) (talk) 11:45, 11 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Scann (WDU), thank you for your clarify. I understand that there are no big diffrence between various versions, but it would be much better if they specify in detail. Thanks again.--Namoroka (talk) 14:51, 11 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hello @Namoroka, fortunately they were quick to solve the issue, and now you can find the website with the proper license -- find it here. It's a CC BY SA 4.0 and it also has now a link to the deed. Cheers! Scann (WDU) (talk) 20:47, 11 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks again, and what another image are you referring to, I think this should be valued, because its cropped version is used in most projects and articles about her. ツredmyname💬09:54, 13 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
use in any work, regardless of content
creation of derivative works
commercial use
free distribution
See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

Comments Support Good quality. --Alexander-9312:51, 22 March 2025 (UTC)Reply Oppose I disagree, even though the brightness and sharpness is way better than in the source File:MelanieGriffits-CarnavalMDP2025.tif. First of all, the photo was upscaled from the source. And there are artifacts, most prominently the patterns similar to goose bumps on her lower right arm just above the bracelet (the one shown on the left side of the photo), or the peculiar patterns on the same arm close to the shoulder. I suppose that even the dark freckles on the face might be an AI-misinterpretation of some hairs or shadows. This photo is overprocessed. --Robert Flogaus-Faust14:59, 22 March 2025 (UTC)Reply Comment Sorry, I don't think any more that the photo was upscaled. And may be the goose bumps were there and became visible by some raw conversion miracle. But their ellipsoid patterns look odd and the patterns higher up on the arm look highly unusual. --Robert Flogaus-Faust15:11, 22 March 2025 (UTC)Reply @Robert Flogaus-Faust: I used AI denoising, but there is nothing AI-generated or AI-upscaled here. These patterns exited on the original raw file, and my processing apparently increased their visibility. I found another defect (too strong CA removal) and uploaded a new version where I also improved the two areas you mentioned. --Plozessor16:13, 22 March 2025 (UTC)Reply Support O.k., this version looks much better. Thanks! --Robert Flogaus-Faust18:39, 22 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:SanCayetano-IglesiaSagixedradaEucaristia-CABA.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.
Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Hello Ezarate!,
You are receiving this message as you have previously participated in one of the Wiki Loves X campaigns or are an active Wikimedia Commons contributor.
We’re excited to announce that the Wiki Science Competition 2025 in India is being organized for the very first time at a national level.
This global campaign celebrates science through freely licensed images, videos, and other media on Wikimedia Commons. By participating, you help make science more visible, accessible, and inspiring to people everywhere.
The competition features eight exciting categories:
People in Science
Microscopy
Astronomy
Everyday Science
Scientific Equipment
Chemistry
Physics
Special Category
Campaign Duration:
The competition will run from 1 November to 15 December 2025.
You can upload your images anytime during this period.
Images taken before 1 November 2025 are also eligible, as long as they have never been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons before.
We’re excited to introduce the first-ever dedicated "Mobile Photography" participation option.
Now, you can upload photographs taken with your mobile phone directly through a special upload wizard.
This new option is designed to encourage students and individuals who may not have access to high-end cameras like DSLRs to participate.
Whether your images are captured using a mobile phone or a professional DSLR, all submissions will be judged equally within the relevant category.
This ensures that everyone has an equal opportunity to capture and share the wonders of science from their own perspective.
We look forward to your participation and support in making this national campaign a great success. It’s your chance to participate, get recognized, and show how science looks through your lens!. Thank you.

Hello Ezarate,
The world’s traditions are disappearing faster than we can document them, but you can help change that.
On behalf of the Wiki Loves Folklore International Team, we are reaching out to invite you to contribute to the 2026 edition of our global campaign.
Share Your Cultural Heritage with the World
Wiki Loves Folklore is an international media contest dedicated to documenting the "intangible" beauty of our cultures. Whether it’s the vibrant colours of a folk festival, the rhythm of a traditional dance, the secrets of a family recipe, or the legends of your hometown, your media helps preserve these legacies for generations to come.
How You Can Contribute
Participating is simple, and every upload contributes to the world's largest free knowledge repository:
Capture: Take photos, record videos, or capture audio of folk activities, music, mythology, or traditional wear.
Upload: Share your files on Wikimedia Commons between 1 February 2026 and 31 March 2026.
Win: Beyond the satisfaction of preservation, there are international prizes for the most impactful contributions.
If you believe the content does not meet the criteria for speedy deletion, you may replace the speedy deletion tag with a regular deletion request (if the content has not been deleted) or request undeletion (if the content has already been deleted).
All your uploads, including deleted ones, are listed in your upload log.
If you need help, please read our frequently asked questions or visit the help desk. Please do not remove this message from your talk page. You may set up archiving instead.

Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!

Comment Very interesting, but the file page in far much uncomplete. For instance, there is a special template you must use when you modify a picture with AI. the {retouched} is not enough, have a look to the file pages of my recent nominations. You should use « extracted from » with a link to the original and « images extracted » with a link to the cleaned picture. The scope is too large too if there is any other picture of this man. Furthermore, I think (matter of taste !) that your guy’s face looks a bit too « wax » and unnatural.--Jebulon (talk) 23:16, 22 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, you should add the template {AI modified} in the file page, and could not use {retouched} template only, and not for an AI production. some say here that AI generated files are not restorations or retouches, but creation of an entirely new file. I disagree (for part) but I have had problems with a FP nomination I was obliged to withdraw. --Jebulon (talk) 10:13, 25 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
SupportBest in scope of course. But you still did not manage the file pages as it should be. The Template {AI modified} is not at the good place, you should subsequently modify the text of the {retouched} template (no more allusion to Flow). And in the file page you should use the {image extracted} template instead of the {extracted from} you used. Done for you by me ! Maybe you should just look at one of my recent nominations ? Sorry to bother you ;).--Jebulon (talk) 20:28, 25 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
